CHAPTER 8

One Day in the Life of Dražen Erdemović

Dražen Erdemović, born in 1971 in Tuzla, Bosnia, of a Croatian mother and a Serbian father, was accused of crimes against humanity for taking part in a massacre of Muslim men from Srebrenica on July 16, 1995. During the investigation and the trial, he repeatedly expressed his remorse for the crimes he had committed. Erdemović explained that he was forced to shoot because when he refused, his commander threatened him with death. His initial sentence was ten years in prison. On appeal it was reduced to five years because the tribunal acknowledged that Erdemović had acted under extreme duress. He was a witness for the prosecution in the Krstić case and in the Karadžić-Mladić case. Today he is free and enjoys the status of a protected witness.
